pallet rack FAQ

We answer frequently asked questions about pallet racks.

Quel rayonnage à palettes me convient le mieux ?

components at a glance

What components do the pallet racks consist of?

Stable shelf frames

The blue frames of the pallet rack (also called pallet rack stands or support frames) form the basic structure of your new rack. They are made of cold-rolled steel with precise perforation. They vary in height and depth depending on your chosen configuration. Each frame consists of a front and a rear element that are bolted together by cross and diagonal struts. The supports can be easily hooked in. The surface of the pallet rack frames is powder-coated. A hot-dip galvanized version for use on outdoor surfaces is also available on request.

Secure ground anchoring

The frames are firmly anchored in the ground with base plates and bolt anchors made of steel. They ensure an exact distribution of the point load - maximum stability for your pallet rack!

Robust straps

The orange supports (also known as crossbeams or supporting beams) are hung horizontally in the frames. They are simply inserted and secured with locking pins - this means that your rack can be quickly reconstructed later if necessary. The height, width and length of the supports vary depending on the configuration of your desired pallet rack. Thanks to their tubular shape, they are highly torsion-resistant and offer extreme strength and rigidity in both vertical and horizontal areas.

Shelf supports to choose from:

  • Chipboard for storing dry goods, such as boxes. The load capacity per m² is up to 150 kg.
  • Hot-dip galvanized grid flooring is protected against corrosion and permeable to light, air and water. Due to its higher load capacity, the grid is suitable for heavy goods and also for storing liquids and hazardous goods, for example. The load capacity per insert is up to 1000 kg.
  • A depth support enables the transverse storage of Euro pallets or smaller pallets
  • A hot-dip galvanized wire mesh as protection against falling objects or for storing very light goods. The load capacity per pallet is up to 750 kg. The mesh width is 40 mm.
  • A lattice box support for the safe storage of Euro lattice boxes using guide rails
  • No shelf support for storing pallets directly on the beams

push-through protection

A push-through protection prevents a pallet from falling backwards - and is therefore very important for the safety of the pallet rack. It is attached to the side of the rack that is not used for loading and unloading. They are required by law for pallet racks that are placed in parallel.

collision protection

Collision protection is used to prevent damage to the shelf support. According to DIN EN 15365 and DGUV 108-007, the corner areas must be equipped with collision protection when forklifts are used. If forklifts and electric high lift trucks are used, our collision protection package M or L is required, which is anchored in the floor. Do you only use hand-operated high lift trucks in your warehouse? Choose our small collision protection package S for shelf warehouses with little goods turnover. This shelf protection is screwed to the shelf.

side protection

Side protection (also flank protection or crash barriers) protects your shelving system from damage to the outer shelf supports caused by accidental collisions with forklifts, pallet trucks, etc. In addition, the yellow paintwork with black signal stripes ensures increased employee attention. One-sided flank protection is required if your pallet rack is to be free-standing on one side (i.e. attached to a wall on the other end). If your rack is to be free-standing on both sides, two-sided side protection is required by law.

Initial consultation on purchasing a pallet rack

How to buy the right pallet rack for your storage and warehouse – Find out more about the structure, properties, advantages and disadvantages and safety regulations of pallet racks here.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of pallet racks?

Advantages:

  • Pallets can be reached individually
  • Good use of room height
  • Can be expanded later
  • Transverse and longitudinal storage with shelves possible

Disadvantages:

  • Requires the use of forklifts and pallet trucks
  • Goods must be palletized
  • High security requirements

What should you consider when choosing a shelf?

The 7 most important questions when purchasing a pallet rack as a checklist:

  1. Does the desired pallet rack make optimal use of the available space?
  2. Can I make full use of the room height with the pallet rack?
  3. How much space must be left in the aisles for employees and transport vehicles?
  4. Does the warehouse need to be prepared for automation?
  5. Do I need a shelf with roller tracks?
  6. Do I also want to store hazardous substances on the storage shelves?
  7. Is the industrial shelf available in the required dimensions?

Buy pallet racking new or used?

The right way to buy for companies is almost always to buy new, because you have full control over the equipment of the pallet racks. You have the option of having your racks made to measure for your storage space. Buying new is particularly advantageous for long-term investments. High-quality pallet racks cost several hundred to a thousand euros. Maintenance costs, on the other hand, are low.

  • Used: Buying used may be cheaper than buying new, but you will have to make do with what is currently available on the second-hand market. Custom-made items are not possible here.
  • Rent: Renting is the most expensive form of purchase. This model is particularly useful when short periods of time need to be bridged. It is often possible to purchase the residual value after the rental period.

Size & Load Capacity

When selecting a new pallet rack, size and load capacity are key decision factors:

  • Height: The height to be selected depends primarily on the ceiling height. If there is a lot of space available in height, this should be used. The maximum lifting height of existing high lift trucks/industrial trucks must also be taken into account. Common heights are between 2.5m and 7.5m. In larger warehouses, high racks up to 15m high are also common.
  • Depth: The depth required is usually dependent on the aisle width. Shelving is available in single and double depth. The standard for single depth is 1000mm for Euro pallets.
  • Length: The The length of the rack is essentially determined by the available space and the desired storage capacity. Pallet racks are available in virtually unlimited lengths.
  • Levels: Pallet racks usually have two to five levels. It must be ensured that employees can also reach the top level.
  • Parking spaces: 2-4 parking spaces per level and field depending on the pallet rack

Which material should be chosen?

  • Metal/Steel: Pallet racks made of steel offer high stability and durability.
  • Stainless steel: Stainless steel is the higher quality metal variant compared to steel. It is also highly resistant to corrosion. These shelves are not affected by moisture.
  • Painted: Painted shelves allow for a wide range of color designs and are designed for indoor use. The paint serves as an extra protective layer for the shelf surface.

Construction & Safety of Pallet Racks

The two most important components of a pallet rack are the rack frames - bolted or welded as a framework - and the suspended longitudinal beams. Here are some recommendations for assembling the rack systems and for the annual shelf inspection of your rack systems:

  1. Make sure you place your shelving system on a solid surface.
  2. Due to their different lengths, trusses can support different loads.
  3. Maximum load is only possible with evenly distributed load.
  4. Each shelf stand should be mounted in the floor with two screw connections - these are of course included in the shipping package.
  5. Levels without a floor are only suitable for the storage of palletized goods.
  6. Make use of the base plates. The shelf will stand without them, but the information on the load capacity will then no longer apply.
  7. The shelves are delivered disassembled. The assembly instructions will help you with the assembly.

Furthermore, some terms related to security are explained:

  • Wide aisle warehouse: Shelves with normal aisle width and very good accessibility from all sides are the most commonly used in warehouses because they are technically simple and inexpensive to implement. A quick and flexible expansion is possible.
  • Narrow aisle warehouses: Narrow aisle warehouses offer the decisive advantage that more space is available in the same area. This optimization is achieved through a higher storage density and thus compensates for a challenge of wide aisle warehouses. However, these types of warehouses are technically more complex to set up and more expensive. However, they are particularly suitable for small warehouses. Pallets can only be stored and retrieved from the side.
  • Assembly instructions: Manufacturers usually provide pallet rack assembly instructions. You can download our instructions as a PDF above.
  • Anchoring: Anchoring is required for all racks that are operated with a forklift. We also offer an assembly service.
  • Foundation: A pallet rack foundation significantly increases stability when used outdoors.
  • Distance: The correct distance between shelves is specified in Germany by the trade association. The standard minimum distance is 200 mm. Spacers are used to keep two rows of shelves at a certain distance from each other.
  • Marking: Fixed shelves with a shelf load of more than 200 kg must be marked with information about the manufacturer, type designation, year of manufacture and the permissible shelf and bay load.
  • Bend length: The pallet rack bend length or shelf height indicates the distance from the hall floor to the top edge of the next shelf.
  • Overhang : The pallet rack overhang indicates how far a pallet can protrude in the rack.
  • Push-through protection: Prevents pallets from being accidentally pushed through the rack during loading.
  • Training: Employees must be trained in the correct use of pallet racks at least once a year.
  • Fire protection: All fire protection requirements in the warehouse must be observed.
  • Inspection: The shelf inspection is an annual inspection that must be carried out in accordance with DIN EN 15635. A written report on the condition of the shelves is prepared and must be kept. The inspection is carried out by a qualified person.
  • Technical drawing: Technical drawings or pallet rack CAD drawings help to better plan the equipment of the warehouse with shelves. The drawings clearly show all dimensions, so the space requirements can be planned precisely.

Accessories & Shelf Protection

  • Shelf: Pallet rack shelves are part of the standard accessories for pallet racks. The shelves can be used without tools by simply inserting them. Depending on the thickness, they are very stable.
  • Wood/chipboard: Pallet rack shelves made of wood or chipboard are particularly economical to purchase. These products are recommended for equipping many shelves.
  • Grid floor: A pallet rack grid is particularly robust and durable. As with the wooden floors, it can be attached without tools.
  • Grid rear wall: The grid rear wall for pallet racks provides reliable protection against push-throughs.
  • Traverse/Holm: Additional shelf levels can be created in the traverse rack, which is useful for subsequently increasing capacity.
  • Load distributor: A pallet rack load distributor enables installation on asphalt floors.
  • Shelf labeling: Depending on the warehouse, several hundred to hundreds of thousands of labels or signs are necessary for pallet rack labeling in order to improve processes and increase productivity.
  • Ram protection: With a pallet rack ram protection, the rack is effectively protected against damage caused by transport vehicles.
